Exhaust Manifold Studs 200 85

On my 85 245ti, I'm having some trouble keeping the exhaust mani studs (and I think maybe a nut or two) tight. The studs don't seem to bootom out in their holes, but rather run into the collar around the middle of them. I'm hesitant to tighten them down very much against that collar. Any suggestions? Longer studs? Go ahead and tighten them? Loc-tite? Blue? Red? Mean Green? Also, I didn't replace the nuts when I reinstalled everything, thinking I should probably get new ones?
