Intermitent no start or surging 200 1979

Usually first run of the day she will act like shes starving for fuel. Then run perfect for the remainder of day starting and stoppping many times 100 to 200 miles. Yesterday she popped and farted but no start. I ran the battery down trying to no avail. Charged battery tried again ; nothing! Later she started first time and ran beautifuly! Today no start just popped and farted then started and ran @ 2500 RPMs for a 30 seconds and died. Any advice will be great! new fuel filter,plugs good,checked pump relay looks fine? HEEEELP!!! THANKS
