Clunk in front end 700 1988

I have reviewed the FAQs regarding the "clunk in my front end." But I need a little advice.

If I move the car up and down I can put my hand on top of the shock treaded rod and big nut and feel the clunk. I unscrewed the big nut and retightned the nut. My question is....does the shock treaded rod screw into the shock tub or does the rod rotate freely in the shock tub. I have tightened the nut up twice, but I still feel the clunk. Also, in FAQs it talks about spacers and I do not have any spacers. All I have is the nut, the rubber washer and the steel washer. Should I add some spacers?

Any advice would be great. Thank you much.

Jim
