fuel gauge failure 900 1996

I own a 1996 940 Estate which recently just stopped whilst driving. The repairman traced it to fuel pump failure and was rectified. However the fuel gauge light is now constantly lighted. Going back to the repairman was no help as he insisted that the light was on when he took the car. Can anyone help.
