Three tailgate wiring questions 200 86

1. After splicing back together the wires that had been cut at the hinges, the rear wiper gave my one complete swipe then quit. I have access to the connectors at the rooofline. How do I test for continuity at this point in the harness (to determine if the short is in the repair, tailgats, or closer to the front of the car?)

2. I take it that the thick, black wires in the hinge (still OK) go to the rear window demister. How to I do test to see if this unit is working?

3. Now that I have removed the tailgate wiring from each hinge (favoring an external loop) how do I seal the hinges against water leaking into the car and the tailgate?
