Screwball stuff 200 1983

I thought I would ask this general question to see if anybody can come up with a definative answer. Today I walked out to my car, which hadn't been started in two days, put the key in the ignition and tried to start it. I got nothing, repeat nothing. I immediately thought "(favorite 4 letter word here)! I must have left the lights on...dead battery. I looked and the lights were in the off position, the dome light was off and everything looked ok. I tested the drop across the battery which tested fully charged. Hmmmm, I looked around a bit...tried starting again, nothing. Then I disconnected the battery, then reconnected the battery (having heard that in some cars this "resets" some electrical components) and tried to start again, this time it started as if everything was normal. I've driven the car around all day and it works normally.

What happened? Why would disconnecting and reconnecting the battery fix anything?

Thanks,

Will
