Gear Shift Starting 900 1994

I just bought a 1994 960 and I love it! However, after starting perfectly during my first five days of owning it, suddenly I have to fiddle with the gear shift to get a signal to the starter. All the dash lights come on, headlghts will work, but starter will not engage. No clicking. Brand new battery. Any ideas? Thanks and I LOVE this site.
