oil burning after weber conv. ??? 140-160 1970

Okay... I have a '70 145 that had original strombergs. I gave it the standard Weber conversion (good used IPD set-up). Ever since, it smokes horrendously during deceleration, specifically when car is over-running the engine, such as coming off of the freeway. I'm pretty sure its oil, the smoke is very blue.

My thought is that the bypass valve on the strombergs kept manifold vacuum from being as high as it would typically be in that situation. However, the weber has no such device, so the dramatic increase in vacuum is perhaps sucking oil up past the rings.

It should be noted that I had a valve grind done and I put new stem seals on at that time, and the valve guides were well within their wear limit.

(I am of course kicking myself for not putting new rings on while the head was off, as I suspected they might be worn, but at the time I had literally no money left after new timing set, top end gaskets, valve job, weber kit, etc.)

At any rate, does anyone have suggestions for a remedy? Could it be anything other than rings?
