Hi all,
My 83 Turbo started pouring out white smoke after a 'spirited' run... silly me didn't do a compression test and just assumed the head gasket was shot, so I tore the head off, to find that there was actually nothing wrong with the gasket.
I did, however, find a lot of oil in my intake/intercooler lines, so I'm thinking that the turbo seals went (haven't had time to look closely).
The only other thing I can think of is that the head cracked and the coolant leaked through there, though again I haven't had time to look closely at it. None of the spark plugs or pistons looked 'steam cleaned' -- they were all equally 'dirty'.
So, here's my question -- if the oil seals on the turbo went, would the engine pump out white smoke because the oil is sucking through the i/c and into the intake, through the engine, and out -- or because it's pouring into the hot exhaust?
At the time, I didn't check if the smoke was oily smelling -- I was driving along at 55... though I'm sure everyone behind me could have told me.
Thanks .. ChrisM
