I need information on identification of a relay and what it controls, and if it might be related to some known problems observed since repairs were made to the car (1983 240 GLT station wagon). Also, how can I test the relay to determine if it is defective or working properly.

While beginning to troubleshoot some problems behind/under the dash, a relay (I think) fell to the floor board as I removed the underdash trim cover (driver's side). It neatly fit back onto its plug located almost directly above the gas pedal. I'm not sure how long this was disconnected or how it became disconnected. It may be the reason for the problems that I was troubleshooting. I drove the car with it connected and noticed no changes with the relay disconnected.

The relay's labeling is as follows:

5SA 12V

It has eight spade male terminals with each labeled as:

for the first row: GF2 GF1 GF/L S

corresponding wires: R/W(2) Y(2) blank Blue

second row: 58 SU 15 31

corresponding wires: Black R/Blue(2) Black/W Gray

Here's what I was troubleshooting (if it makes a difference):

1. The fuel gage is not reading properly. With power on, needle indicates a full or nearly full tank all the time.

2. Temp gage reads high all the time though about 1/4" below red zone.

3. I have no hot air. Blower speed selection, vent selection all function.

At the same time, turbo was just replaced (first time in 240,000 miles) and cylinder head was replaced. All of the above 3 items were malfunctions immediately after getting car back from these repairs. Now, turbo pressure gage is malfunctioning, needle will not fluctuate.

Once I learn about this relay, I'll feel better about whether to work these issues with the repair shop or not.
