Shift selector lamp replacement 900 92

I have been attempting to replace some burned out lamps throughout my 1992 Volvo 940. I have removed the shift selector lamp and replaced the bulb but can't seem to get the lamp assembly back into it's holder. There is no room at all to get the lamp into position. Is there a trick to this or should I just give it up? Thanks. DHY
