6 Volts served this country well for many years. But along came 12 volts and it opened the door to new possibilities. Now 12 volts seem to be the norm. I have a 1960 Volvo 544 B16B engine with a 6 volt generator and was wondering what it would take to convert it from 6 volts to 12 volts. I was thinking about going down to the local wrecking yard and getting an alternator off of a 140 series Volvo with the B20 engine. I know that I have to replace the light bulbs but I have no idea as to what do do about the generator to alternator conversion as well as the relay switch conversion. I believe the wiring will handle 12 volts. Does anyone have any ideas that would help me? It's a hassle to try looking for bulbs that are rated 6 volts. Also, i'm getting tired to listening to the transistor radio that's in it. It takes a while for it to start working- assuming that it stays working.
