how do you fix old old varnish smellin gas in fuel system? 200 78gt

i got the gt this weekend, changed the oil, coolant, and put some decent used plugs in squirted oil in cylinders etc. the gas gauge read empty, so i put some injector cleaner and 5 gal fresh gas in. when i went to start the motor made a air whining sound after i finished cranking it over. after about 10 tries cranking the motor started to catch and almost run for about 3 or 5 secs. it then would not start again, the best i got was another sec or two. well i noticed a varnish smell not gas so i imagine there was some bad 2yr+ gas in the system. is this keepin the motor from going? have i ruined the fuel distributor or injectors or better yet the engine by tryin to start the motor? any suggestions on what my next step should be would be greatly appreciated. thanks will
