Hello everyone-
I have a question about a steering problem. My steering gets really stiff sometimes. I have to really crank on it around corners sometimes. Other times, the steering is kind of between normal and stiff. Sometimes it steers just fine. I can feel that the tension that makes it stiff has been released somehow. The stiff feel is becoming more frequent though.
My mechanic seemed to think it might be the U-joint worn in the steering column. I was wondering how that could be if my symtoms seem to change all of the time. If the U-joint was worn, wouldn't it stay worn and the steering wouldn't get better or worse? I'm thinking that this might be a steering rack issue.
The steering is fine at highway speeds, doesn't shake or shudder. My PS fluid level is right where it should be. The boots or rack don't leak at all. Could this problem possibly be fixed by just changing the fluid?
