Side body trim repair - use bubble gum? 200 1992

The side molding strip on the passenger door is loose at one end. The dealer gave me the wrong clip, it's head is too small to snap into the track on the back of the trim piece, and now the hole in the door is occupied by the wrong clip. I am tempted to use the equivalent of a wad of bubble gum, for example a plug of silicone bath tub caulk, to stick the trim to the clip. Whaddyathink? Alternative suggestions?

Assuming I go the route of obtaining the right clip, how do you get the "wrong" clip out without damaging the door?

Thanks.
