Problems with replacement exhaust system 200 1989

I replaced the exhaust system on my 1989 240 wagon last night, from the center muffler back. The new exhaust looked exactly the same as the old one, but the pipe joining the two mufflers together is positioned hard up against the rear axle. This means every time I hit a small bump the exhaust clunks against the axle. This can't be good for the longevity of the system (and it's annoying too!). Where the pipe is bent to go around the axle it is also flattened out - it certainly looks like it's designed to miss the axle.

Have I bought an aftermarket part that is not designed properly? Or have I done something dumb when putting the system together? I used new hangers for the rear muffler, but just used the old ones for the center muffler. I was wondering about getting some longer rubber hangers for the center muffler to drop the whole thing down a bit?

Anybody had any similar experiences?
