overheating 200 1987

Dear 244 owners (and others):

Driving home on the Jersey Turnpike today the temperature gauge was fine until I pulled up to the tollbooth, and then it started to creep up to a quarter inch below the red zone. The weather is hot and humid (near ninety degrees). The gauge has only been going up when I have been slowling down (either in heavy traffic or at stop lights, etc.). At highway speeds (70+) it is fine. This creeping up of the gauge has only happened during the recent warm weather. Any ideas on cause and solution?

The car is an '87 244 GL with about 116K. Thanks.

Tim Strode
