240 Stalls when I let off the gas too fast 200 1984

My '84 244Ti stalls if I let off the cass to fast, no matter hot or warm. Example is coming to a toll booth on the freeway - if it's out of gear and I go right to the brake, the RPMs will drop to 2- or 300, or the engine will even stall. It runs great at all other times. I suspect fuel mixture or throttle adj., air starved..., but I don't know for sure. Has anyone else experienced this who might offer some advice?
