Hello,
Now that I've got this 164E, my eventual plan is to give it a good going over, get it running very well and get all safety items up to spec (brakes etc) because I am eventually going to sell it to a friend of mine who is not as mechanically inclined as I am. Looking at it from a reliability and maintenance standpoint, are there any good points replacements available for the B30 distributor?
My '79 VW Bus has a Compufire points replacement module in it now courtesty of the previous owner. I must say it has dramatically reduced the amount of time I would typically spend with my head in the engine room futzing with points and timing. I think this kind of thing would be ideal to install for someone who's not so into messing with points on a regular basis. I'm familiar with Compufire which I am having a good experience with and others VW have spoken of Pertronix which seems to be the chief competitor. I'm not looking for a CDI system, just a simple points replacement. Anybody have any good/bad experiences/advice to share?
Also, the sunroof. This particular car has a hand-crank operated sliding steel roof. As it sits now the roof is closed, however the left rear corner of the roof is sagging down (as seen from the outside, I'm not speaking of the headliner) as if whatever is suppose to push the back of the sunroof up flush with the regular roof has not done its job on that side. Also, when I turn the crank to open the roof the roof does not slide and instead I hear a faint clickety noise, like a ratchet. Once I get my service manual I intend to see if I can pry down the headliner and have a look inside but I am a complete novice to sunroof repair so if anyone has seen this problem before, I'd really appreciate some advice.
thanks once again,
Sean Bartnik
