740 SE stalling problem. please help! 700 1991

the diagnostics code reads 1-4-4. what is the most likley cause of an intermittent stalling problem? the tach immediatly drops to 0 and starts up shortly thereafter. it has been doing this for about a year, but is steadily getting worse. does this sound like an ecu problem?
