Haven't changed engine mounts before - is it a mechanic's workshop job? 200 1988

Colleagues in grime, the engine mounts on my car need replacing. I'm told it's not a good idea to jack the engine up at the oil sump so as to change them. Is that the case? Is this a job for a mechanic's workshop? I've never done engine mounts before so any ideas would be appreciated.
