No Overdrive - New Tranny? 200 1989

I've lost 4th gear on my AT. I haven't lost much in the way of fuel economy as this is a commuter but I'd like to get it fixed and get another 60k before I break down and buy something else.

Occasionaly on startup the OD lockout light comes on and stays on. Usually I can engage/disengage the lockout with the switch on the gear selector. One time out of 20 the OD engages at highway speeds.

My mechanic says the OD Relay is good and that the transmission needs to be replaced. I checked the archives, which suggest that the OD Solenoid could be the problem.

Any suggestions?
