the mythical Group A flathood 200 1983

Okay, I'm posting this to clear up some questions I have about the 'mythical' group A 242s. I hope some of you guys out there have the details that I'm lacking. I've read about as much stuff as I can find on the web, but how can you tell the difference between this elite group and the standard 242 Turbo? I know the Group A has a flathood, but I've also seen regular 242s that have been modified with a 79 flathood and they look the same. I also think the Group A came with an intercooler, but then again these can be added on. It all boils down to this, how do I avoid buying a modified 242 Turbo while thinking I am buying a Group A car? I would think there is something in the VIN that might distinguish them, but so far I have no verification.

Thanks in advance,

Mark
