intermittent hesitation..'puffs of black smoke' UPDATE problem found... 200 1984

A month ago I posted a problem of intermittent hesitation and puffs of black smoke.... this problem was happening at all speeds but was more

evident on going up hills or on dips in the road....

On Friday I was checking under the hood for loose vacuum hoses and to make sure that the flame trap was seated correctly.

My hand was jammed under the #3 intake when suddenly the engine started to race.... moved my hand and it stopped.... Stuck my hand again under the #3 intake aqnd again the engine started to race. I hade found the problem

a short in the wiring for the engine temperature sensor.... I fixed the

wire and now I have great response and power.
