bad head/gasket 200 79

i was told by my mechanic today that the head on my 79 245dl wagon was bad or it may need a new gasket, he needed to tear it down to be sure. I did't have the 400.00 to liberate but I ask you guys is it possible for me to remove the head here in my garage and fix the car on my own. I have never done any of this type of work. I am attached to the car but do not feel it is worth the money the mechanic is talking about to fix
