OD OFF light on after hot start. 200 1983

This is the second time in two weeks that the OD OFF light has come on after I stop someplace for a few minutes and then re-start the car. Pressing the OD switch has no effect and the switch works fine all other times. The last time I had to drive 20 miles on the highway without overdrive and when I exited and was waiting at a light, I put it in neutral, the light went out and I got overdrive back. What gives? The transmission shifts perfectly otherwise. Is there maybe a bad temperature sensor that is blocking the overdrive when the trans gets too hot?
