Hello,
I wonder if anyone can help me with this problem. I'm pulling my hair out over it.
Basically what happens is that my alternator isn't charging my battery. I take the alternator out and take it into the shop and I get out 14.86 volts at around 70 amps. I put it back in the car and everything runs off the battery, which eventually gets low enough to not be able to start the car. I get about 12 volts (or whatever the current battery voltage is) at the charging terminal, and about 11-12 volts on the other wire (B+ wire) (manual says it goes to the charging light, etc in the dash.).
I've tried a lot of things... but nothing seems to work. I haven't yet replaced the entire ignition/charging/battery wiring though (but I'm trying to save alittle money - at the expense of time and frustration i realize, but i will get the whole thing rewired as soon as i'm able... but i'm just trying to fix this problem first)... all my fuses are good (i tested)... everyhting else seems to work... Is there some fuse that i missed? Is it a wiring fault? Is there a problem in my dash? I know there's a voltage regulator and stuff in there, but it's only going in and my gauges and dash lights appear fine. (actually both my fuel and temp guages are not working but I'm quite sure that it's the sending unit for both of them (grounding them works) and i have them just haven't put them in yet.)
'preciate any advice or tips... I've checked ground and power for the alternator...good. but for some reason i absolutely cannot get 14 volts out of it when it's in the car. I think it may be somehting with the battery cables, and the cable to the starter.. even thugh it doesn't make much sense to me, I'm goign to try to doing somehting with those now.
