OK, i have a 1983 242 GLT. The car was barely running when a got it. Now, after i've replaced many items on the engine - it runs great and sounds great. However, when i took it on the road, it didn't seem to have the power that it should. I had replaced the turbo unit with a used one with 80k on it. [it was good, and the wastegate was free]. When we take it on the road, the turbo doesn't whine or anything. The turbo gauge inside car when not running is between the black and orange. When the car is started the gauge seems to never get out of the black - but moves. My question is-is the turbo bad? Is the wastegate frozen? vacuum lines? What could possibly be wrong? How do I test the turbo? The car has about as much power as my 1985 GL with 145k on it, but the mechanic doesnt seem to think this GLT has suffiecient power.
-Also there is a water cooled turbo on a junkyard car that is supposedly good, however, the top hose is off, and most likely water got in it. Should I stay away from this turbo if i need one?
Thanks very much, Jon
