help! can't get the steering wheel back on! 200 89

I've taken the steering wheel off like 30+ times and never have had a problem getting it back on until now...

The nut just won't go down on the shaft as far as it used to! It keeps stopping about 1/3 of the way down. Any ideas? I've been using a 27mm deep socket, extension, and rachet. I don't see how I could have done any damage to it...
