15w-40 oil 700 1990

I've heard that older Volvo engines should go to a 15W-40 oil and that Volvo recomends it. I have 142,000 on my 1990, 740 GLE engine. The owner manual says I can use it but for towing and mountain driving, and, when its not too cold that is. So I live in Southern Louisiana and its hot here most of the year. Should I go to this weight of oil, is it good for my/older engines?
