How do you get a blown head gasket???? 200 1986

My mechanic bought a 1989 Volvo Wagon for 1,000.00 and he said it had a blown head gasket. How does that happen and is that expensive. The Volvo body and inside of the car was in mint condition. I'm just curious. I guess I'm taking a crash course from this board on "Volvos." You guys have taught me an awful lot and I appreciate it. Keep those answers coming...I will soon have those manicured nails under that hood. (smile).
