A/C Clutch problem (wiring) 700 1986

Replaced evaporator coil, expansion valve, condensor, accumulator, compressor & clutch (all parts from Auto Zone) to convert from R12 to R134a.

Problem is after running the engine for awhile, the ground wire on the compressor catches on fire, but the fuse doesn't burn. We noticed that the diode or resistor was missing from the new compessor, would that make a difference? Could the new clutch be shorting out?

puzzled in Cajun country...

thanks for your help.
