Third Seat Safety Issues 700 Any

I would like to hear opinions (or preferably data) about the safety of the 3rd seat in to 700/900 series wagons. Surely there have been incidents of rear-end collisions while the seat was occupied, I just haven't heard of any first hand. I would have to think Volvo has some test data around somewhere, although it may not be real favorable....?? Thanks a bunch.
