Auto tranny, Who makes it? 200 1991

My 1991 240 has the slush box tranny. (A bad hip has pretty much ended my clutch pumping days.) Seems to shift alright at 140K. The question is this: Who makes this unit? I heard it was a Japanese unit, but whose? I have also heard that Ford is using a Japanese supplier for their F-150, which I also own. But I don't know if this is true either.
