Removal of front windshield 200 1989

There is a significant leak somewhere along the left side of the front windshield in our 89 240. Have tried squeezing in sealants to no avail. Glass companies want too much money to remove the windshield and reseal, plus won't guarantee that windshield won't be broken. How do I remove the outer seal/trim around the windshield? What supplies will I need and what parts should be replaced? Can this be done without physically removing the glass?
