Slow cranking when cold???? And a 140amp alternator? 700 1988

Hey all,

My ovlov here in Australia seems to crank alot slower (very noticable crank speed difference) when cold (about 10 degrees celcius - not cold by american standards!!), but if i start it in the afternoon, it will crank at perfectly normal speed..... It just seems to be slower in the mornings....maybe it hates getting up? Battery voltage is normal when starting, etc, battery is about 10 months old, and is a 13 plate or something ridiculously large (only *just* fits in the tray), original alternator, at 203,000k's, but it seems to charge fine (have a largish stereo which drains 83 amps (!!!!!!!) at peak, and the battery is yet to run flat (touch wood!) while driving, even at night....... Is slow cranking when cold normal?

On another note!!!! Can i install a 140amp GM alternator easily, or are all the brackets/fittings different? I'd really like it (more need than like) to be a bolt in fit, but i am hoping that someone else here has done it!~! (Anyone got part numbers?!)

Thanks all,

Az
