960 - Love it or Leave it? 900 1996

My folks are getting a new vehicle, and I have the opportunity to buy their '96 960 with about 60K miles on it. The car has been maintained professionally and is in no joke perfect condition. I think the car is great and would like to have it, but I've read a few horror stories about mechanical problems and lack of reliability. I expect maintenance costs to be higher than on a domestic or Japanese car (and I know about changing the timing belt), but are the 960's all that bad? My wife would rather go with a Mercedes 300E a couple of years older, but my dad's Volvo has been beautifully kept and I think it would be a better bet if the 960's are fundamentally sound vehicles. Thanks in advance for any comments or recommendations you might have.
