AW55 no downshift over 50mph 200 78

I have a '78 244 with AW55 auto trans. When the trans is cold it seems more sluggish than normal. After running for awhile it's not nearly as sluggish, but then it will not down shift from third to second gear over about 50mph, and no downshift from second to first when I floor it in second. I tried adjusting the kickdown cable and made very little difference. Also, what is the best transmission fluid for this unit,typeF or Dexron? Thanks much for your input.
