2 top dash lights and instrument lights have failed 200 86

I purchased an instrument cluster, tach and small clock to replace my broken speedometer and to spruce up the interior. I used the circuit board from the new speedo, replaced the clock w/the tach and installed the small clock. I tested out all the lights before screwing in the instrument cluster. Everything worked. As I was pushing it into the dash, the 2 illumination lights as well as the other interior dash lights flickered, a faint smell of burnt wiring filled the air (no smoke) and off they went.

All other lights (bottom row of reminders, turn signals) & gauges (tach, speedo, fuel, temp, small clock) in the cluster work.

Any clues???????? I checked the fuses, made sure the wires were not fraid, but I had no luck. At least the interior looks sweet during the day!
