I have 1994 940 Turbo.
The tachometer has recently started to exhibit erratic performance. The needle appears to register 500-1000 rpm high without a corresponding increase in perceived engine speed. This has happened at steady highway speed. The needle will at times drop to the correct reading spontaneously as if someone spun a dial.
Is there anyway to isolate the problem to the tach itself? I'm not sure how the tachometer reading is taken in a Volvo. Does it have a sensor? Since the engine is running smooth and not speeding up, I assume the various electronic engine controls aren't affected?
All other guages are operating correctly.
Are these tachometers repairable and if they are, any recommendations for a repair facility?
I haven't summoned up the courage to ask the dealer how much a new tach/turbo guage combo is.
Thanks.
