My pleading post is off the charts so an update is in order for others who may decide to pull the electrical guts from the wiper motor/gearbox, at their peril.

When I did so to clean the contacts I did not reinstall properly. There are three copper tines that must be properly separated when they are positioned back in the grooves of the gear wheel (I am making up terminology here).

I had two tines touching. Hence, blew the fuse for the wiper whenever I turned the key.

It's all OK now, and managed to fix the self-inflicted wound before it rained. Thanks to those who gave me advice.
