Blower Motor Melt Down. 200 1984

Here's the problem,

Sometime in May, while running the AC @ full blast in my 240T, the blower started doing some weird things. The blower started run at low speed even when I had it switched to the high position. Soon, the fan would not work alltogether. Also, I could detect a burning smell in my car about the same time the fan started going whacky.

So, the question is, does anybody have an idea what happened? Would I have to replace the blower motor? And if so, is this a DIY job? I've looked at the books, and the blower looks like it's burried pretty deep in beneath the dash (I must admit that the location of the blower (GM), under the hood, was about the only thing good with THAT car). So....comments?
