What octane does everyone use? 200 82

Volvos are new to me. I've been using 87 octane and found to be getting 21 mpg. I did notice knocks in 3rd going up hills so I tried 89 octane and it seems a bit better. What does everyone use? Any frequent additives and how often. What kind of mileage is the average for these? No turbo on mine by the way.

P.S. I love my car. Volvos are great!
