Steering u-joint replacement 200 90

My wagon has sticky steering. Thanks to the achieve and the steering section, I have determined that it needs new u-joints. Looks ez enough. After 2 hours and 3 bloody knuckles, I STILL CANNOT get the #$?%$ steering link out!

Any tricks? Remove the steering wheel? Use a bigger hammer?

The repiar manual warns to keep the steering wheel staight and ignition lock to prevent air bag deployment. I will look at diconnecting the air bag.
