Transmission flush 900 1994

Our '94 940 with the AW lock-up automatic (AW70L?) has never to my knowledge had a serious transmission service. It is working fine, but at 175,000 km the fluid is pretty brown. Is there any truth to the conventional wisdom that having a "flush and fill" could cause problems to surface?
