Does muffler tape work? 700 1992

I have a crack in the tailpipe (before the final muffler)on our 745. It is a split in the tube lengthwise. Is it worthwhile to try muffler tape from the auto parts store. Does the stuff work for any length of time or is it just a very short term fix?
