SRS light stays on when starting on 740 GL 700 1990

I wanted to get an expert opinion on this:

SRS light sometimes stays on after starting and electrical stuff - lights, windows, radio - does not work. When I turn off the ignition and then re-start the engine, everything works OK. Soemtimes I have to restart it twice.

I am taking my car to a mechanic this friday, but I wanted to know how serious is this (potential) problem with SRS. Just don't want it to blow up in my face when I start it again...
