Q: Hard V. Soft Rubber Motor Mounts? 200 89

Someone advise me to get the relatively harder (Swedish Scantek) rubber motor mounts, and stay away from the softer ones. He said the harder ones can be identified by a seam that goes around the center of the rubber, whereas, the softer ones have no seam. The seam is of no importance I know of, unless these are designed to split under force for safety reasons. The OEM mounts have the seams.

Seems (no play on words intended) likely, that the seams are for that reason, as I'm sure they could make a solid piece of rubber without seams, if they wanted to. So perhaps the softer ones stay more intact on impact (not good).

At any rate, this was not the reason they were recommended to me. The reason was that the harder rubber causes less engine wobbling on idle, though there is a trade off for more rigid feel. But is there an advantage to the soft ones? Anyone use both?

Btw, this person also suggested I replace the trans mount, even if it is okay, but did not give any reasons for that. Is this necessary?

Thank you all, as always.

Robert
