Sensor 700 86

While changing oil and filter on my 760 turbo the other day I noticed

a sensor just to the right of my oil filter with a wire that appeared

to be coroded and shorting out on the sensor itself. Is this a temp

sensor for engine management or just for the dash gauges? If it is

for engine management, what are the ramifications of it being shorted

out? Thanks for your help. Dave
