Good afternoon brickboarders. I'm Andy- a newby here. I don't own a Volvo yet, but I am considering getting a brick for a second vehicle. I am looking in particular at a 80's 740 or 760.
During my search, I found a '84 760 turbo stick with 168,000. I must admit that I found it at an impound yard, which might be a definite detractor since there is no known vehicle history. Its proximity in the yard suggests that it has been there for some time, along with the cobwebs on it. I have driven an '85 and an '88 740, and I have worked on both of those vehicles, so I had some idea about the obvious flaws on the brick. It passed the immediate visual inspection. However, when I tried to start it, it acted as if it had been impounded for a long time. It rolled over, and wouldn't start. I was patient, and after a few tries, I got it to start. The vehicle kept acting as if it were going to stall. I fed it some gas, which seemed to alleviate the problem somewhat. I continued to do that until the engine was warm. Once the engine was warm, the vehicle would idle on its own, but it still hesitated badly and fluctuated from 600 to 1000 rpm idling.
It sounds like a fuel problem to me, but I wanted to post the situation here and get some feedback. All the hoses were intact and were not cracked. It appears the turbo is sound. The exhaust seemed normal. Again, this is just a quick 10 minutes of playing with it. I am considering going back tomorrow for another look, but the fact it is from an impound yard and I already know it has at least one problem throw up some red flags. Thanks in advance!!
Andy
